Each year Luther brings one or more "Artist in Residence" to campus. During the time of residency, the Luther community has an opportunity to meet with the artist and learn about their area of expertise, and the artist works with each class of students to create something unique. These experiences enhance learning as they are integrated with curriculum objectives in many different subject areas.
This year Luther’s Artist in Residence is percussionist David Vita. He will be teaching students about the use and origin of different percussion instruments and different percussion rhythms. At the end of his residency, students will participate in a percussion concert at Luther.
In the past, other Artist in Residence have included writer Deborah Ritz, potter Amy Chaplin, and stained glass artist Mary McNeil. Ms. McNeil’s residency produced a beautiful stained glass panel of nine different Christian symbols that hangs in the school foyer.
In the Spring of 2004, Luther welcomed not just one writer to campus, but many. Richmond Times Dispatch columnist Stacy Hawkins Adams coordinated a series of presentations and experiences intended to immerse Luther students in the art of journalism. Other reporters and editors who participated in this event included Randy Fitzgerald, Michael Paul Williams, Alberta Lindsey, Rex Springston, Greg Gilligan, Stephen Lewis, Will Jones, Penelope Carrington, Tom Kapsidelis, Ed Kelleher, and photographer Dean Hoffmeyer. The end result of this project was a student produced newspaper.
